High-Crash Corridors
High-crash corridors: I-25, US 287 (College Avenue), and SH 14 (Poudre Canyon Road)
Fort Collins's road network carries heavy daily traffic, and distraction turns each of its main corridors dangerous. Interstate 25 is the city's main north-south spine and is subject to periodic closures from high winds and winter storms. US Highway 287 runs through the city as College Avenue and north toward Wyoming, a CDOT-documented high-crash corridor with 570 crashes and 15 fatalities over a five-year study period on the segment from Ted's Place to the Wyoming state line. College Avenue south of Prospect Road carries more than 40,000 vehicles per day, with accident-prone intersections at Drake Road and Horsetooth Road. Colorado State Highway 14 runs west through Poudre Canyon toward Cameron Pass, a narrow mountain route with seasonal ice and limited sight lines. A driver who can manage inattention on a quiet road cannot at these speeds.
