5 safety tips for pedestrians in Colorado

The natural beauty of Colorado gives people a good reason to get outside and exercise. The summer weather means more people are out walking, jogging, biking an otherwise enjoying the outdoors.

If you are one of these people, your safety is vital to keeping you healthy and active – especially when sharing the road with often-distracted or reckless motorists. Follow these tips to ensure you can continue getting your workouts in safely.

1. Face oncoming traffic

Walking or jogging against traffic allows you to see the vehicles coming toward you. Your reaction time may be quicker if a car or truck gets too close to you.

2. Do not wear headphones

When you have loud music playing, you may pay more attention to the beat than your surroundings. You might not hear a car coming or a driver honking the horn. If you prefer to listen to music, try using only one earpiece.

 3. Keep on sidewalks

According to Denver municipal law, pedestrians must use provided sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks, you can jog or walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. When using multiuse trails, follow the laws of the road so as not to collide with bicyclists or runners.

4. Wear brightly colored clothing

Whether you exercise in the morning or evening, it is important to wear brightly colored clothing. This will improve your visibility to oncoming traffic.

5. Stay alert

Sometimes joggers or walkers get into a zone when exercising and forget to pay attention to things around them. Whether you’re on a new or familiar path, remember to stay alert.

Research pedestrian laws in your area and follow the rules of the road. The more you are aware of your surroundings and general safety, the less likely you are to have an accident.
