3 tips for helping your teenager stay safe driving

After your teenage driver gets a driver’s license, they may want to drive independently as much as possible. This new licensure gives them freedom, but you may have concerns about the risk of a car accident.

Car accidents are the leading cause of fatalities for teenagers in the U.S.  To help your teen stay safe on the road and reduce the risk of an accident, there are strategies you can use to prepare them to drive safely.

1. Set clear boundaries

Let your teenager know what your expectations are for driving. For example, set and enforce a curfew or tell them that you prohibit giving friends rides for several months after licensure or cellphone use while driving.

2. Lead by example

You can show your teenager how to be a good driver by setting a good example and remaining consistent with your driving. Always wear your seatbelt, maintain your composure, refrain from using your cellphone and driving and follow the rules of the road.

3. Encourage practice and education

Have your teenager practice in many types of driving situations before they start driving independently. You may also want to consider enrolling your teenager in a driver’s safety education course.

Try to keep the conversation about driving open with your teenager. Talk to them about your expectations regularly and let your teen come to you with concerns or questions about driving safely.
