5 jogging safety tips

Jogging offers many potential health benefits. Some you may expect, such as improved flexibility and weight loss. Others may surprise you, such as improved mental health and an immune system boost.

Despite the potential benefits, however, there are also risks involved with jogging. You could get hit by a car, experience an injury from tripping and falling or become the victim of a crime.

Though it is impossible to eliminate the risks completely, you can improve your chances of avoiding injury and other adverse circumstances while jogging by following these safety tips.

1. Carry a phone for emergencies

If you become involved in an accident, or witness one along your running route, it is important to notify authorities right away. You should always carry a charged cell phone for that purpose.

However, keep your phone put away except in the case of an emergency. Using your cell phone while running can be a dangerous distraction that could cause an accident.

2. Make yourself visible

This is especially important if you run when it is dark out, which is almost unavoidable during the winter and early spring. Choose gear that is reflective to help drivers see you.

3. Run against traffic

This may seem counterintuitive, but it actually makes good sense. This way, you can see what approaching traffic is doing and can react accordingly to any possible danger.

4. Do not use headphones

Sounds can alert you to possible dangers and give you a chance to react. Take advantage of this potential lifesaver by leaving your headphones at home.

5. Run with a partner when possible

A serious accident may render you unconscious and unable to use your cell phone. If this happens, a running partner can summon help right away.

It is important to be proactive in trying to prevent accidents and injuries while jogging. You should also know what to do in response to an accident, even if it turns out to be unavoidable.
